VISION Preview | Introducing VISION 2020 | February 2020

Welcome to VISION 2020.

It’s here.

VISION, one of the most prestigious automotive training events, is here once more! From March 5–8 in Overland Park, Kansas, over 3,500 repair shop owners, technicians, service staff and a bevy of sponsoring vendors will pack the halls and expo floor of the Overland Park Convention Center.

At a glance, VISION-goers can expect over 100 informational and training sessions; over 65 professionals sharing their insights and knowledge about auto repair, ADAS, industry innovations, shop management, customer service and more; and a 60,000-square-foot exposition hall featuring the latest gadgets, gizmos and technology.

VISION is more than just a concentrated group of industry peers getting together for a few brief hours, however—it’s a critical cog of North American mechanical repair, an interactive, introspective mirror on the state of the industry, and a glimpse and conversation of what the next decade holds for sophisticated vehicle and technological repair. Featuring more than 100 cutting-edge courses, breakout sessions and hands-on training for management, technical, heavy-duty and educator professionals, VISION is one of the top destinations for anyone who seriously wants to learn in the industry.

It can be easy to be overcome by the sheer volume of people, products and opportunities during the weekend in Kansas City. That’s why MWACA Magazine has assembled this exclusive preview for new and veteran VISION-goers alike, from morning registration to a brief preview of featured vendors and more.

Class schedules, exhibitor booth numbers and locations are all correct as of print date; for any recent updates or changes, please visit visionkc.com.

From Sheri Hamilton:

What should VISION 2020 attendees be excited about this year?

We’re bringing many areas of change to this year’s program. We’ll have unique training, changing schedules, and more—the Educator Think Tank now features training opportunities throughout the program, instead of just on Friday [like previous years]. They’ll have hands-on training and the chance to attend sessions throughout the program. Educators can now take classes and fulfill these duties, making their schedules more versatile and allowing us to offer more value.

On Friday, March 6, the Power Summit Management Lunch will feature a keynote speaker from the Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center, discussing customer service. It’s a unique opportunity for shop owners to learn from someone outside our industry. Ritz-Carlton sets the standard for customer service and this presentation will offer unique insights and mindsets that can be applied in the automotive service industry. We thought we’d change it up and bring a dynamic and energizing presence to this Friday lunch event in 2020.

What makes VISION 2020 different from past years?

I’m trying to change things up about 20 percent, in order to offer new and fresh perspectives that can make a big impact.

We’re bringing new presentation technology. Some of the sessions will have instructors presenting training in novel ways—there will be digital boards, and more interactivity with polls and questions. This newer AV technology supports innovative ways to foster the learning experience.

When you’ve been to the same event for numerous years, you kind of know what to expect, and sometimes that can stagnate the learning over time. If you walk into a familiar classroom with a new delivery or new angle, however, you’re now challenged (and encouraged) to become more aware of your surroundings and the lessons therein. Newer attendees may not realize it; veteran ones should welcome it. We want to get people out of their normal path. It’s about offering value and a memorable experience.

More technology and a few other changes are in store for attendees during their VISION experience. One thing that won’t change is the quality of training and networking opportunities available.

Will the New Product Showcase continue to grow as vehicle and shop technology becomes more prevalent?

This showcase is a great way to quickly and easily see many of the latest and greatest products displayed in the exhibit hall. With more exhibitors participating in the New Product Showcase, we decided to bring back voting by the attendees to select the best new product of the year on the VISION show floor. This year we’ll be utilizing technology to easily cast those votes.

For exhibitors, it can sometimes be hard to have an item or service easily seen in the huge exhibit hall, but here they can make sure attendees easily see the latest and greatest in the industry.

How can attendees prepare for VISION?

Besides water and footwear? Come well rested—step out of your shell and make some connections. It’s a great opportunity to expand your network. People in this industry are probably more introverts than extroverts; there’s no stranger here, though, everyone can fit right in.

Don’t walk into a class, take notes, and leave. Find those opportunities before, during and after a class to network, meet someone, and continue the conversation. If you haven’t engaged in an event like this before, VISION is the perfect place to start.

Are there networking opportunities throughout the weekend?

Many groups start communicating ahead of time for joint dinners, happy hours, and more. The reception is a big attraction—the industry professionals networking reception on Saturday evening is a great opportunity for drinks and to connect after a full day of learning before a group dinner or the awards dinner and comedy night.

Sunday morning will also have a networking breakfast, but no keynote or closing session. This will provide attendees with another opportunity to network before their final class and their departure home.

Kansas City is known for barbecue; what’s your No. 1 recommended restaurant?

You can’t come to Kansas City and not experience the barbecue. And everyone has their favorites. The styles of barbecue in Kansas City are so different, you have to experience it. My personal favorite is Jack Stack Barbecue which is conveniently just down the road. Q39, Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, and Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue are also great options. And Char Bar has an amazing weekend brunch.
